What Tread Depth Is, and Why It Gets Measured in 32nds of an Inch
Tread is the patterned rubber that touches the road. Tread depth is the distance from the top of a tread block down to the bottom of a main groove, and it is what lets a tire push water out of the way instead of floating on top of it. In the United States that distance is measured in 32nds of an inch, which is why every figure below is written as a fraction.
According to Bridgestone, new tires typically arrive with 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch of tread, and truck, SUV and winter tires often start deeper. From there, wear is slow and easy to ignore. Long freeway miles on the 10, the 15 and the 60, plus months of Inland Empire heat, wear tread down steadily — and the handful of wet days this region gets each year are exactly when shallow tread costs the most.

What You Need: A Penny, a Quarter, or an Inexpensive Gauge
Three tools, three different jobs:
A penny checks the 2/32-inch line.
A quarter checks the 4/32-inch line.
A tread depth gauge gives you the actual number.
The coins are go/no-go checks. They tell you whether you have crossed a line, not how much tread is left or how fast it is disappearing. Bridgestone notes that an inexpensive graduated probe gauge from an auto parts store works fine, and that all gauges should read in both 32nds of an inch and millimeters. That number is what lets you track wear month to month.
Before you measure, park on level ground, straighten the wheels and turn the vehicle off. Check all four tires, not just the fronts — wear varies by position, and that variation is often the most useful thing you learn.
The Penny Test: Checking the 2/32-Inch Line
Place a penny between the tread ribs with Lincoln’s head pointing down into the groove, then look at the top of his head. Per Bridgestone, if the top of his head disappears between the ribs, your tread is still above 2/32 of an inch. If you can see his entire head, the tire has reached the end of its useful life.
The reason the coin works at all is that the distance from the edge of a penny to the top of Lincoln’s head is about 2/32 of an inch. It is a coincidence of coin design, not an engineering standard.
That 2/32 figure carries weight beyond the coin. NHTSA states that tires are not safe and should be replaced when the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch, and Bridgestone notes the U.S. Department of Transportation recommends replacing at that depth, with many states requiring it by law.
Bridgestone also stresses something drivers skip: check several places around each tire, pay attention to the areas that look most worn, and replace the tire when any area fails — even if the rest still measures deeper.
The Quarter Test: Checking the 4/32-Inch Line
Insert a quarter into a tread groove with Washington’s head pointing down. If the tread covers part of his head, you have at least 4/32 of an inch. If you can see all of it, Bridgestone calls that tread dangerously shallow for wet conditions and recommends you start planning for new tires at that mark rather than waiting for the penny to fail.
Bridgestone’s reasoning is that wet stopping distances lengthen and hydroplaning risk climbs below 4/32. A Tire Rack test from July 2007, run at 70 mph on wetted asphalt, put numbers on it. A BMW 325i stopped in 195.2 feet on new tread, 290.0 feet at 4/32 and 378.8 feet at 2/32. A Ford F-150 in the same test needed 255.9 feet new, 377.8 feet at 4/32 and 499.5 feet at 2/32 — roughly 244 feet more than on new tires, which is worth sitting with if you drive a truck or SUV.
Those numbers only show up on a wet road. Around here that usually means the first storm after a dry summer, when oil and dust are still on the pavement and grip is at its worst.
Where on the Tire to Measure, and the One Spot to Avoid
Bridgestone recommends checking the inner, center and outer edges of each tire and averaging the readings, rather than trusting one spot. Tires rarely wear evenly across their width — a tire can pass at the center and fail at the shoulder. Move around the circumference too, since a tire can be worn in one arc and fine in another.
Here is the part almost no guide mentions. California Vehicle Code Section 27465(c) states that the measurement of tread depth shall not be made where tie bars, humps or fillets are located. Those are the small raised bridges or ramps of rubber you will find inside a groove, molded in by the manufacturer. Rest a coin or a probe on one and the groove reads shallower than the tire really is. That is how drivers talk themselves into tires early, or miss a genuinely worn one. Slide over to a clear stretch of the groove instead.
Tread wear indicator bars are a different feature, and those you are meant to use. Bridgestone says every performance, light truck and medium commercial tire has indicator bars embedded between the tread ribs at 2/32 of an inch; NHTSA describes them as raised sections that run in between the tire’s tread. When the surrounding tread is flush with them, the tire is worn to that depth. Michelin marks its own wear indicators with a small Michelin man, so on those tires you have a landmark to look for.
If the inner or outer edge reads noticeably lower than the center, that is a wear pattern rather than a mileage problem, and alignment and inflation are worth checking before new tires go on. What California Actually Requires: Vehicle Code Section 27465
Most articles leave drivers believing 2/32 of an inch is the legal floor everywhere. In California it is not.
California Vehicle Code Section 27465(b)(1) sets the passenger-vehicle minimum at 1/32 of an inch of tread depth in any two adjacent grooves at any location of the tire. That is half the depth of the wear bars molded into the tire. Which means a tire can be entirely legal in California and still be past the point NHTSA and the DOT say it should have been replaced. Legal and safe are not the same number here.
Three other parts of the same section are worth knowing:
Work trucks. Section 27465(b)(2) sets 4/32 of an inch at all points in all major grooves on the steering axle of the larger commercial vehicles listed in Vehicle Code Section 34500, and 2/32 on their other axles.
Mountain trips. Section 27465(b)(3) requires 6/32 of an inch on snow tires used in place of tire traction devices in posted traction device control areas — the rule that applies when chain controls go up on the way to Big Bear or Wrightwood.
Buying used. Section 27465(a) bars a dealer from selling or installing a tire below those depths.
None of this is legal advice, and the section itself is the authoritative text. The practical point is simply that California’s floor sits below the replacement figure, and the margin in between is yours to manage.
2/32 or 4/32? Bridgestone and Michelin Do Not Agree
Check two manufacturer sites and you will find they contradict each other, so it is worth saying plainly.
Bridgestone holds that the penny test only tells you whether tread has reached the legal limit, that tire performance can diminish significantly before tread hits 2/32, and that even tires meeting the minimum may not prevent hydroplaning. It points drivers to 4/32 as the moment to start planning.
Michelin states that the minimum tread depth is 2/32, or 1.6 mm, and that changing tires before that threshold is premature — because it designs its tires to perform right up to the wear point.
Both readings are defensible. One prioritizes wet-weather margin; the other prioritizes not discarding rubber that still works. The disagreement is a real tradeoff, not a gap in anyone’s knowledge.
What we tell customers, as the shop’s own judgment rather than anyone’s technical claim: at 4/32, start planning and budgeting. At 2/32, replace. And if wet miles or mountain routes are part of your normal week, act closer to 4/32. Whether your tires are wearing evenly matters as much as the number itself, which is why a wheel alignment check often belongs in the same conversation.
When to Have Someone Else Measure It
The home check answers one question well — how much tread is left. What it cannot tell you is why the tread is disappearing unevenly, and that is the part that gets expensive when it is ignored.
Bring the vehicle in if you notice:
One edge measurably lower than the other.
One tire clearly ahead of the rest, even after a recent rotation.
A reading that drops noticeably between monthly checks.
A groove where you cannot find a clear, flat spot to measure.
