What is car A/C service?
Car A/C service finds and fixes whatever keeps your vehicle's climate control from blowing the air you asked for. It covers the whole system: the refrigerant and any leaks, the compressor, the blower motor and cabin air filter, the evaporator, and the expansion valve or orifice tube.
The same system defrosts your windshield, so it matters in winter as much as on a hot summer day. We service both R-134a systems and the R-1234yf systems many newer models use.
R-1234yf ready
The proper equipment for newer refrigerant systems.
Once a year
How often we recommend an A/C check, before the summer heat.
Free inspection
Multi-point, a $75 value. No purchase required.
Signs your car A/C needs service
These are the most common signs of an A/C problem, and what usually causes them.
Warm air from the vents
Usually low refrigerant from a leak, or the compressor.
Weak airflow
Often a clogged cabin air filter or a worn blower motor.
Musty smell
Mold or bacteria from moisture in the evaporator core.
Squealing, grinding or rattling
The compressor or another part may be failing.
Also have it checked if:
It keeps cycling on and off
No air comes out
The heat will not turn on
You see a refrigerant leak
Why A/C problems are worth fixing early
Over time, A/C components wear out or clog. Cooling fades a little at a time until the system stops working altogether, and a leak or a noisy part left alone tends to turn into a bigger, more costly repair.
A yearly A/C check, before the summer heat, catches these problems early. And because the system also clears your windshield, a weak A/C is a visibility problem in winter, not only a comfort problem in summer.
Benefits of a healthy A/C system
- Cold air on the hottest days
- A windshield that clears when you defrost
- Fresher air in the cabin
- Problems caught while they are small
- Fewer costly repairs
R-1234yf or R-134a?
The refrigerant your vehicle uses decides what equipment the job needs. We service both.
R-1234yf systems
Many newer vehicles use R-1234yf, which is more environmentally friendly than earlier refrigerants. It needs its own recovery and recharge equipment, and we have it for its maintenance and repair.
Older systems
Earlier vehicles use R-134a, the refrigerant R-1234yf replaced. We diagnose and repair those systems too, including the complex automated climate controls many cars now have.
A/C repairs we handle
Tell us what the A/C is doing, and our technicians diagnose the cause and make the repair your vehicle needs. You get a complete estimate with every repair, and most repairs are backed by our 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty.
Compressor leaking, noisy, or its clutch not engaging? See AC compressor repair.
Warm air instead of cold
Low refrigerant, a leak or a failing part.
No air from the vents
Blower motor and airflow problems.
Heat that will not turn on
The heating side of your climate control.
Compressor problems
Leaks, noise or a clutch that will not engage.
Refrigerant leaks
Found and repaired, so the system holds its charge.
A/C recharge
When the system is low on refrigerant.
More A/C services
When the problem is the compressor itself, see the page for that repair.

Car A/C Service FAQ
Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?
Warm air usually points to low refrigerant or a compressor problem. Low refrigerant is most often caused by a leak somewhere in the system, so the leak has to be found and repaired for the cold air to last. Our technicians diagnose the cause before recommending a repair.
Can you service A/C systems that use R-1234yf refrigerant?
Yes. Many newer vehicles use R-1234yf, a refrigerant that is more environmentally friendly than the ones earlier vehicles use. It needs its own recovery and recharge equipment, which we have, and we also service the R-134a systems in older vehicles.
Why does my car A/C smell musty?
A musty or unpleasant smell from the vents when the A/C is on is usually mold or bacteria. It grows when moisture collects in the evaporator core, and it affects the air you breathe inside the car. Have it checked promptly rather than covering the smell up.
Do you repair car heaters too?
Yes. Your vehicle's climate control handles both heat and cold air, and we repair both. If the heat will not turn on, no air comes out of the vents, or the system no longer clears your windshield, bring it in and our technicians will diagnose it.
How do I know if my A/C problem is the compressor?
Grinding or squealing with the A/C on, a compressor that leaks, or a compressor clutch that does not engage all point to the compressor. Weak airflow or a bad smell usually starts elsewhere, in the cabin air filter, the blower motor or the evaporator. We diagnose the system so the right part gets repaired.
