What is an oil change?
An oil change drains your engine's used oil, replaces the oil filter and refills the engine with fresh oil. Engine oil lubricates the engine's parts, reduces friction and prevents wear, and it also carries away contaminants and helps regulate engine temperature.
Over time oil breaks down and loses those properties. That is why oil changes are part of your vehicle's regular maintenance, and essential to keep the engine running smoothly and efficiently.

Signs your car needs an oil change
These are the most common signs that your engine is due for fresh oil.
Service or maintenance light
Your car's reminder says service is due.
Dirty or dark oil
Oil darkens as it collects dirt and debris.
Louder engine noise
Worn-out oil can cause knocking or clicking.
Low oil level
Often low? It may be a leak or oil consumption.
Also have it checked when:
The oil life monitor runs low
You reach your manufacturer's interval
You smell something burning
Why regular oil changes matter
Old oil breaks down, turns thicker and stops lubricating well. Dirt, metal particles and sludge build up in the engine and can clog the oil filter, so parts wear faster, the engine works harder and gas mileage drops.
Skipped oil changes lead to premature wear and expensive engine repairs. Fresh oil keeps the inside of the engine clean and properly lubricated, helps it hold the right temperature and prevents overheating.
Benefits of regular oil changes
- Longer engine life
- Less friction and wear
- Better gas mileage
- Better performance
- Fewer costly repairs
How often do you need an oil change?
Our rule of thumb is an oil change every 5,000 miles. Your vehicle's own interval can be shorter or longer: some Nissan and Infiniti models have service bulletins (TSBs) that shorten it to 3,500-4,000 miles, while other vehicles call for 7,500 or even 10,000 miles on full synthetic. How you drive, your engine and whether it burns oil matter too, so we check your vehicle's schedule and any bulletins for you.
Oil life monitor
Many newer cars calculate oil life for you.
Owner's manual
No reminder? Use its maintenance schedule.
Service bulletins
Some makers change the interval in a TSB.

Oil Change FAQ
How often should I change my oil?
Our rule of thumb is an oil change every 5,000 miles. Your vehicle's own interval can be shorter or longer: some Nissan and Infiniti models have service bulletins (TSBs) that shorten it to 3,500-4,000 miles, while other vehicles call for 7,500 or even 10,000 miles on full synthetic. How you drive, your engine and whether it burns oil matter too, so we check your vehicle's schedule and any bulletins for you.
What is included in an oil change at Comtires?
Full synthetic motor oil (diesel engines get diesel-rated oil) and a new oil filter, plus a check of your brake, power steering, coolant and washer fluids, tire pressure and tread depth, wiper blades and air filter. We advise you on your preventive maintenance schedule and include a complimentary digital inspection with photos when available.
What are the signs my car needs an oil change?
The most likely sign is the service oil or maintenance light. Other signs are dirty or dark oil, louder engine noise such as knocking or clicking, an oil level that is consistently low and a burning smell. The check engine light can also point to it, although that is less likely.
What happens if I skip oil changes?
Old oil breaks down and stops lubricating well. Dirt, metal particles and sludge build up, can clog the oil filter and wear engine parts early, so the engine works harder, performance and gas mileage drop, and the risk of costly repairs goes up. Regular oil changes keep the engine clean and extend its life.
Why is my oil level always low?
If you check your oil regularly and the level is consistently low, it could be an oil leak or excessive oil consumption. It is worth having the vehicle inspected to find the cause. Our free inspection is a $75 value with no purchase required, so you can find out what is going on first.
