What does the A/C compressor do?
The A/C compressor compresses and circulates the refrigerant gas that cools and dehumidifies the air in your vehicle. Without a working compressor, your air conditioning cannot blow cold air.
Compressors are belt-driven or, in hybrids and EVs, high-voltage electric. We diagnose and repair both, Teslas included, and we check the whole A/C system so the real cause gets fixed.
Belt or electric
We repair both compressor types.
No compressor, no cold air
It moves the refrigerant that does the cooling.
Free inspection
Multi-point, a $75 value. No purchase required.
Signs your A/C compressor needs repair
These signs point to the compressor. Weak airflow or a musty smell usually starts elsewhere: see our car air conditioning service.
No cold air
A worn compressor stops circulating the refrigerant.
Grinding or squealing
From the engine area, with the A/C on.
Leaking refrigerant
An oily residue near the A/C components.
Cold air fades after a recharge
The refrigerant is escaping, such as through a leak.
Why a compressor problem should not wait
The compressor is one of the most important, and most expensive, parts of the A/C system. Grinding or squealing can mean internal damage or just a loose belt, and a refrigerant leak reduces cooling and can damage other components of the system.
Caught early, small problems are repaired before they become a compressor failure or replacement. That saves money and helps the compressor keep working for many years.
Benefits of regular A/C checks
- Small problems fixed before they grow
- Lower repair costs
- A longer compressor life
- Less risk to other A/C parts
- Steady cold air on hot days
Belt-driven or electric compressor?
Belt-driven compressors
Driven by the engine through a belt. A squeal can come from a loose belt rather than the compressor itself, which is why we diagnose before we replace anything.
Electrically driven compressors
Used in hybrids and EVs, Teslas included, and powered by the high-voltage system. We safely disable it before any work and keep the compressor's special oil free of contamination.
How we repair your A/C compressor
A recharge can bring the cold air back for a while, but if the refrigerant was low, it is escaping somewhere. So we evaluate the complete air conditioning system to find the root cause, such as a leak, instead of only topping it up. We find leaks with an electronic leak detector and service the system on our two Robinair machines: an AC1234-9 for R-1234yf, and a second machine for R-134a.
We work on every type of A/C system, from vacuum-operated controls and belt-driven compressors to the high-voltage electric compressors in hybrids and EVs.
Root cause found
A leak gets repaired, not just refilled.

AC Compressor Repair FAQ
What are the signs of a bad AC compressor?
The most common are air from the vents that is no longer cold, grinding or squealing from the engine area when the A/C is on, and refrigerant leaking near the A/C components. A noise can mean internal damage or simply a loose belt, so we diagnose it before recommending a repair.
Will an A/C recharge fix my compressor problem?
Usually not for long. A recharge refills the refrigerant, but if the level was low, it is escaping somewhere, most often through a leak. We evaluate the complete air conditioning system to find and repair the root cause, so the cold air does not fade again.
Can you repair the electric A/C compressors in hybrids and EVs?
Yes. We service belt-driven compressors and the high-voltage electric compressors in hybrids and EVs, Teslas included. An electric compressor runs on the vehicle's high-voltage system, so we safely disable it before any work and use insulated tools and gloves, and we keep the compressor's special oil free of contamination. We also work on systems with vacuum-operated controls.
Why does regular A/C maintenance matter for the compressor?
The compressor is one of the most important, and most expensive, parts of the A/C system. Regular A/C checks catch small problems, such as a leak or a loose belt, before they lead to a compressor failure or replacement. That saves money and helps the compressor last for many years.
